is three pixel artists who want to improve, inspire, and have fun with their art! this blog is for weekly challenges, theme pieces and more!

What’s this blog all about?

This blog is all about pushing our boundaries as pixel artists and developing, re-examining and polishing essential skills required of a pixel artist, via weekly/monthly challenges based on:

  • re-colouring/re-tiling example pieces
  • creating a piece based on a central theme or object
  • speed challenges
  • and challenges based on certain pixel techniques or styles, for example dithering, anti-aliasing, isometric, spriting, etc.

Every Sunday, unless we all happen to be too busy to update the blog. All submissions will be published on the Sunday following the initial post.

Open-source Java program (with Windows installer) that allows you to manipulate the colors in images in 3D, rather than working with two dimensions at a time. You can view individual colors as floating dots or as a geometric shape showing the maximum values of the color ranges, all in several colorspaces such as LAB, LCH, LUV, sRGB, Linear RGB, etc. Individual points can be manipulated or a range of colors near your cursor, and constraints can be placed on hue, luminosity, etc. Try it on an image of a palette and set the Image Visualization mode to Standard for exact colors to see the ramps laid out.

Should the link ever go down (the page says "temporary") here's links to the Windows installer and the source code on Archive.org

If you don't count with company and community websites. This is probably the largest pixel website I've seen. (correct me if I am wrong!)
First of all, this site is all in Chinese. But I like to explain a bit about it and make sure everyone knows how to navigate to the BIG pixel maps!
Basically this is a website that show you all the shops and foods in ALL the night markets in Taiwan. And they are using a hugh pixel image as a sitemap to navigate to all the shops. (so... it might be slow!)

Here is how to browse to those maps:When you get to index page. Scroll down to the bottom and you'll see a window with 3 columes of links on the left side. Click on any one of them in the middle columes and you can see the maps... here is an example.

This URL absolutely should be here at pixeljoint! The style is very easy to recognize if you know enough pixel artists around the world, especially they are from TW!
Of course you can also use a language translate website to do so!

Our career started in 2001 with the Electric Icon Land. It is a website based in a town block composed by several icon stores where you can get “Ol’format” icons for Windows and Macintosh. If you do not know Electric Icon Land, it really worth a visit. In the beginning of 2004 we broke apart and founded Pixeltemple.

Our old website will remain as it is for the whole eternity, like a proud piece of art in our museum. Currently our team is composed by Giovani Faganello and Michelle Lang, graduated in Industrial Design, Visual Communication by the Federal University of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We are the founders and creators of the Pixeltemple.

We are among the first people in Brazil to work with pixel art, initially developing icons for software interface and later entering the field of illustration and website development. We are very proud to work based on friendship and trust.

All of our customers became kind friends at the end of their projects. Our inspirations will ever be the good music and the “oldskool” video games. We love jazz, groove and rock’n roll - to name a few: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Isaac Hayes, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and The Beatles. Japanese video game collection also is our passion.

Open source program for resizing and paletting images using SLIC superpixel segmentation to preserve shapes and edges. The user can mask out areas that should recieve less color detail before processing, as well as make manual pixel and palette adjustments to the processed image which can then be reprocessed to fit the image to the user's changes.

Compiled Windows binary and Github link at the bottom. Thesis PDFs describe the process and can be helpful for understanding what's happening under the surface

TinEye is a nifty reverse image search engine that will check images that you feed it and see if it matches any other images in its database. Pretty useful for finding RIPs on PixelJoint.  Despite it still being Beta, it works pretty well.
