I designed a new character for my previous submission. She seemed pretty cute so I drew her again for fun. At first I was going to have chocolate cakes and candies falling, but after keeping to a limited palette I decided to just go with petals instead.

Edit: small changes made to her left leg. Attempts at editing the hand were unsuccessful, so I've left it as is.

Thank you very much for your extensive critique! You've caught a lot of the things I was stuck on while making this. The hand was indeed supposed to be palm-up, but you're right that the angle of it is off. I'll make some edits to her legs and hand, and hopefully they'll have a more correct shape afterward.

This is a pleasant piece.  A nice, soft palette, quality shading and antialiasing, a pleasing composition and dynamic movements bring this cute anime character design to life.  There is a lot of detail in this image that was executed very well.

While looking over the character, I, too, found the bright outline to be a bit distracting, especially with how much of it is present in the little area containing the hand, fabric, and petals.  The bright outline does a lot to help the image pop off a dark backround and I like it.  It gives a good first impression and only felt distracting while looking to that area of the image.  I think it works well in the end.

The next thing I noticed was the sharp effect the dark outline has on the charcter's shins and ankles.  Within the image, her legs are outlined in a brighter color and are antialiased very well but this stops suddenly with the application of the dark outline.  This feels especially off on her right shin and foot where I particularly feel like the antialiasing should continue.  I also wonder if the shape of the shin and ankle on her right foot could be reworked a little as the sizing seems a little odd to me.

Lastly, something I noticed only after staring at the image for far too long: the extended hand feels like it is in an awkward position and oddly shaped.  My initial thought in viewing the image was that she has her hand out, palm up, to catch the falling petals.  It occured to me that, thinking of it as the back of her hand, I felt her pinky finger was too short and stubby.  Given the shading on the hand and her expected reaction to be looking to catch the falling petals, it does feel as though I am seeing the back of her right hand but I realized that it would probably be very difficult and uncomfortable for her to hold her hand in such a way for the back of her hand to be viewed like that at this angle.   I feel that the angle she is holding her hand would need to be changed as we probably would not be seeing all five fingers from this angle if she is holding her hand out to catch the falling petals.

I then realized that the fingers appear to be curving away in a direction that didn't make sense for thinking of it as the back of her hand.  Thinking of it as the front of her hand, now, the curvature of the fingers and the viewing angle make some sense to me.  If we are seeing the palm of her hand, then I feel the pinky should be elongated and made to feel more in-line with the other fingers.  If we are seeing the palm of her hand, I feel the line of her thumb should continue deeper into the palm and wonder if more shading and lines could be added to detail the palm differently.

I dunno.  I'm pretty sure it's meant as the back of her hand and I feel the angle doesn't work if that's the case but hands are a really tricky thing to draw and the angle we are viewing the character at is an unusual one.  Part of my problem, too, is having trouble figuring out if it is the front or back of the hand.  If it's the back of her hand, defining some knuckles might help; if it's the palm of her hand, drawing some palm lines or shading the inner curvature might help.

I hope I haven't offended you with this wall of text.  I really like the design of this charcter, the pose, the composition, the palette, and the skill with which you applied an anime-style to this work.  The shading in her hair, the folds in the patterned fabric of her skirt, the shine in her eyes and her cheerful expression are all wonderful details.  I see from your other works here that you are quite capable in different sizes and styles an>*** Message truncated (4000 chars max) ***

It looks nice, but that white outline is kind of distracting...
