I guess stained glass was kind of a weird direction to take this challenge, but it was the first thing that came to mind and I really wanted to try it. The first thing I think of when I hear stained glass is big lovely church windows - I wanted to try and capture that feel with a non-Christian religious figure. In this case, Isis, an ancient egyptian goddess.

And I discovered that trying to imitate stained glass is hard! Really hard. I tried to include a lot of different symbolism elements:

Her headdress (horns carrying a red disk, portrayed at the top) stylized to double as ankh imagery

Wings, which Isis is often portrayed with

Leaves and figs of the Sycamore tree, a tree sometimes associated with her

Roses, used in her worship

There's a lot of things that could use improving, but I think I'm happy with how this came out.

You conveyed stain glass really well.

Not knowing what it was, that preview struck me as something quite new and amazing. That being said, I don't like the full piece. But if the preview was by itself, maybe a bit bigger, I'd definately rate the highest I could.

Ok, didn't realise that right away, but finally saw it.

It's actually the former - I was planning to do a bigger reflection, but there were some time constraints involved with the weekly challenge. So I just did a small portion of the window reflecting light onto the floor.

I think saturated colors were a good choice. Is the bottom supposed to be light reflection on the ground or part of the glass itself ?

 Thank you!

jellybeanfish (Level 4 Button Man) @ 5/7/2012 00:32

Thank you  Yeah, stained glass is absolutely beautiful - I love the way light comes through it. I'd love to see a challenge based specifically around stained glass to see people's different interpretations.

Thanks a lot! And thank you for your critique in the challenge thread :)

jellybeanfish (Level 4 Button Man) @ 5/7/2012 00:22

thank you! Yeah, I feel like I could've gotten a more Egyptian feel had I gone with colors inspired by ancient Egyptian art - but I thought going with very saturated colors would help the stained glass feel most. I guess it depends, but I wanted to go with vivid colors to make it really feel like the sun was shining through.

Very nice! I have a same sort of fascination with stained glass (just love the light and colours that come oozing through it), and still looking for a right piece to use it. I like your Egyptian spin on it!

That really looks like a stained glass, and has a great egyptian atmosphere! I really like this fav!

You could have propably got even better egyptian feeling with different colours.

Stava (Level 8 Rear Admiral) @ 5/5/2012 12:43
