In the daytime, the scariest thing in my room was ME.

Not so at night...

@ninja crow

>there'll be no living with him, now.

Nor was there before.  Nice of you to suggest otherwise, though.

The Monongahela Monster (Level 1 Rookie) @ 5/3/2010 13:50

@hatch

>Once you see it, you can't un-see it D:

The REALLY awful thing is the way everything else in the picture supports that interpretation--the pillow being slightly aloft, the lampshade and the bed recoiling from the, ah, the aft thruster, as it were...

So yeah, thanks for wrecking THAT image for me... if I find I have anything else I've labored over that I never want to be able to look at again, I'll be in touch...

user
Ninja Crow (Level 3 Private Eye) @ 5/3/2010 13:05

Oh man, he won first place in his first contest - there'll be no living with him, now.

@ Hatch: curse you!

Super doooper congrats, Monster!

user
Hatch (Level 3 Hatchikyu) @ 5/3/2010 12:24

OK, I was reluctant to post this, because I'm apparently the only one here with the juvenile mind of a five year old, but here goes...

The silhouette of the leaves outside the window makes it look like he's being propelled upward by a mighty blast of flatulence, especially on the preview crop.

Once you see it, you can't un-see it D:

Wow!  I can only humbly thank you all, and assure you that the substantial cash prize will be used to further the Pixel Arts.  I also want to thank my m

WHAT DO YOU MEAN, THERE'S NO CASH PRIZE?!?!?!

Well, isn't this a fine how-do-you-do.  I slave all day over a hot graphics tablet, and THIS is the thanks I get.  Why am *I* the only one working on this relationship?  Etc., etc...

Seriously, though, thanks for all the kind words.

Pickles (Level 2 Hired Gun) @ 5/3/2010 07:09

Deserved first place =D

A great piece I must say.

user
Xellie (Level 1 Seaman) @ 5/3/2010 05:19

I think you did absolutely awesome.  Forget about technique, you capture light and motion and the Emotion in both. Superb.

user
Ixolite (Level 2 Petty Officer) @ 5/3/2010 02:16

I love this one! Especially the night part, great use of colors there.

I like how this one is humorous. Sort of adds to it. :)

user
Nightmare Maker (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 4/26/2010 11:29

First place.

user
Manjaman (Level 8 Cannibal) @ 4/26/2010 05:28

Delicious concept.

user
CDpixel (Level 1 Depressed) @ 4/25/2010 15:02

I think this is a good idea.

The pixels are pretty good as well, not perfect but good.

I like it .

user
dogmeat (Level 1 Gangster) @ 4/25/2010 07:46

The perspective on the bed is really off, shading could use more work too, but overall, interesting work.

user
snowk (Level 7 Mass Murderer) @ 4/24/2010 21:24

I really like this. although,i think teh nighttime one is SO much better than the daytime.=, it is all very good.  im not going to repeat everything about the dithering and such but i will say that you might want to vary the saturation in the shades you use. however, since this is a vert cartoony piece, it might make it look bland. your call bud.

onece again, REALLY GOOD

user
KingOfTheTrolls (Level 9 Boss) @ 4/24/2010 17:20

I love it and I so agree that it looks very inspired by calvin and hobbs. I hope it wins, and keep up the good work. As to the shading I agree maybe a little to much dithering but hey, its still awrsome!

user
chaleeman (Level 1 Gangster) @ 4/24/2010 16:28

yeah there must be a balance on the picture on dithered shading and cel shading

but the piece is great

user
Manupix (Level 11 Godfather) @ 4/24/2010 12:48

Delightfully amazing!

Even though I would usually strongly agree with any comment suggesting less dithering and more AA, in this case I think you just have the perfect fit. Possibly because the piece is large enough to be viewed at 100%.

user
jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 4/24/2010 12:47

Don't misunderstand me. Jagginess and dithering have their place in pixelart and are both 'tools'. I was expressing my opinion for this piece only. That no dithering was used in the character, walls, window, etc. makes the use of it being so obvious in the lamp, floor and nightstand detract from the image itself. Where dithering is used on the mattress edge is fine.

Jaggies too can work and like everything its choosing the right technique in the right places that makes PA unique. The only reason I mentioned it on this piece is because the right shades are in the palette to do so. Having chosen not to do so comes across as a bit amateur to us pixel nerds. A general audience wouldn't even pick this up.

As I said before. A great piece by a skilled artist that will get much respect and notice here once the right uses of techniques is used in your art.

user
Ninja Crow (Level 3 Private Eye) @ 4/24/2010 12:35

I knew this was you from the preview - great entry!

I'm also one of those types who has absolutely no problem with dither or jaggies (I know, weird, huh?).  In fact, sometimes dither makes a piece feel more like pixel art to me (played too many GameBoy games maybe?) and in your picture here, except for perhaps the carpet texture, the dither is absolutely beautiful!

user
1ucas (Level 5 Soldier) @ 4/24/2010 11:41

All in all, I'd also recommend you started practicing some anti aliasing. Your cartoon style is already quite well developed and AA would benefit it way more than dithering.

user
Ivy00 (Level 1 Rookie) @ 4/24/2010 11:06

I like it without the shading, gives it a cartoon feel that is adorable.

user
The Monongahela Monster (Level 1 Rookie) @ 4/24/2010 10:51

...speaking figuratively, of course.  I don't actually have any bellbottoms.

user
The Monongahela Monster (Level 1 Rookie) @ 4/24/2010 10:45

@jalonso and Mis-BUG

I don't know, I guess the dithering might be a bit corny.  I kind of feel like that's part of the charm of a piece of pixel art, though; objecting to jagginess and dithering in pixel art is like saying you like my bellbottoms but you wonder whether they really need to be so WIDE...

user
The Fry Bat (Level 5 Detective) @ 4/24/2010 10:31

I was afraid there weren't going to be any worthwhile challenge entries this week. Suffice to say, I was relieved to behold this piece. I love the little narrative you added.

user
elend (Level 3 Private Eye) @ 4/24/2010 10:21

This is a wonderful idea. It's also well executed. Love it. :D

user
Mis-BUG (Level 9 Boss) @ 4/24/2010 10:06

I aggre with Jal... cell shading would have been a good choice to make the character and the background look better together... But the result is great this way too... I'm really appreciating the piece...

user
jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 4/24/2010 10:02

The use of dithering is not the best choice here. Cell shading would have worked better, me thinks. It may also be that you are still new to PA but you have all the right shades to AA the jaggies but didn't.

Still, a great entry and you can only get better technically in time.

user
1ucas (Level 5 Soldier) @ 4/24/2010 09:53

Great submission! Love the concept, the colors and the overall execution.

I think the texts are fine, and add even more personality to it.

user
Robinhood (Level 9 Boss) @ 4/24/2010 09:51

very nice entry :D

under the bedside table, there's an odd shape.  it might be a mistake coloring with the fill bucket.

user
The Monongahela Monster (Level 1 Rookie) @ 4/24/2010 09:21

@stickytape

>It's very calvin & hobbes.

The highest praise.

user
The Monongahela Monster (Level 1 Rookie) @ 4/24/2010 09:20

@kaneli2000

>the texts are maybe not needed.

Yeah, probably not, but I'm not one to pass up a soap box without climbing up on it and saying a few words.

user
Argyle (Level 6 Manager) @ 4/24/2010 09:08

This is really sweet, I love it!  It's very calvin & hobbes.

user
kaneli2000 (Level 1 Rookie) @ 4/24/2010 09:06

That's really cool, but the texts are maybe not needed. Very well done and a good idea, though :D

user
The Monongahela Monster (Level 1 Rookie) @ 4/24/2010 08:56

@blueberry pie

>Only thing that kinda bothers me is how the shading on the lampshade doesn't seem to follow the object's shape.

Wow... this is a tough crowd.    But okay, I'll buy that; updated to add some modeling to that shadow.

user
Blueberry_pie (Level 7 General Manager) @ 4/24/2010 08:38

Awesome entry. I love the colours :)

Only thing that kinda bothers me is how the shading on the lampshade doesn't seem to follow the object's shape.

user
RollerKingdom (Level 7 Mass Murderer) @ 4/24/2010 07:51

this is amazing hah ;D

user
