Platform game mock-up: The kitten is hungry and really wants some cheese but has to get to it before the greedy mice do and the grumpy puppies stand in her way... C64 hi-res character mode for background graphics, c64 multi-colour sprites with hires sprite overlays for in game graphics and hearts (lives indicator) and overlaid hires sprites for the score. This uses the c64 palette. this would be fully achievable on real hardware if a very well written and stable sprite multi-plexer routine was used. Created this for the weekly challenge and wanted to produce something that was a feasible game concept - very simple platformer although this could be developed to include puzzle elements - for example the mice could be afraid of the kitten but are still chasing the same prize, levels could potentially include movable background objects to block the path of puppies or mice and also to form a path to the cheese...

Great use of hires char mode, and those sprites are just lovely!

As soon as I saw this I thought C64.

Nice chunky pixels and colors.

I can see what you are getting at but it doesn't really work for me as those colours are already used within the shading and shadowing of the background, so they kind of get lost then. I also prefer the crisp background myself especially thinking how this might read on a CRT display where the more subtle background would become even less defined.

Looks really nostalgic!

Though I'm usually for black shadows and hard contrasts, I would consider dark blue or dark gray as background color for the hires background instead of black here. not only would it soften your background, but also would make the sprites pop out more, thus making the gameplay a bit more easy on the eye.

Here is a quick edit if you don't mind: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v157/pembroke/Pixels/pixeljoint/edits/catformer_zpsxkxswmvg.png

Okay, you got me there - it is indeed 15 colours, because I didnn;t use the c64 cyan in the image anywhere, but did use the other 15 in the palette, however when I exported it for some reason irfan view (that I used for the export of the finished image) assigned two whites taking it up to 16 - puzzling...

Good work, but it is 15 colors. =P

I really love how you pixeled the cheese. Also like the mouse-hole's depth. Very nicely achieved.
