I'd say if there's a certain recognizable image OF those characters in a certain pose or something, that could work, but not if it's just the character.

Of course I'm not pain or jalonso or an administrator/mod/etc. so...

I have always been against racism and when I found this picture I thought I would do this... But can we change it around a little? Like instead of white and colored I can put Martian and human?

I'm gonna try this one. So can I clear something up first?

Am I allowed to sketch over this, scan it, and then use the sketch as a lineart?

@ member_profile.asp?PF=13879&FID=1 - Lovec Upírov : Is that a famous picture? Like
http://www.famouspictures.org/index.php?title=Afghan_Eyes_Girl , http://www.famouspictures.org/index.php?title=Flag_on_the_Reichstag or http://www.famouspictures.org/index.php?title=Raising_The_Flag_On_Iwo_Jima

@ member_profile.asp?PF=14999&FID=1 - CaKsTeR : No... "You shouldn't look at your ref picture at all while pixelling.
Study the original and only begin pixelling once you have it committed to memory.
Honor system, you cheating, lazy bums." So study it, then close it and don't look at it again and just pixel what you remember and go from there.

Bullspit.

A reference picture is called so because it is used for REFERENCE!!! You can use it as long as you don't trace it. Its how you learn!

'Nother question:

What do you mean when you say "Pixel your OWN version of a famous picture/photograph"?

Does that mean I'm supposed to keep the image the same, or add something else that wasn't in the original picture?

Naturally, but the rules call for it that you specifically pixel from memory.
Does that mean I'm supposed to keep the image the same, or add something else that wasn't in the original picture?

I think what pain wants is that you try to recreate the original picture as best as possible, without adding your own additions.

Ultimately what I think he is going for with this challenge is to test people's ability to pixel something from memory, ultimately strengthening the super important skill of being able to recall imagery without a reference. If so, this challenge is especially cool because it not only encourages people to pixel something good but it's teaching them a very useful art skill.

@Blackdragon: It's part of the challenge. That way it's not close to the original picture and it's more of your own,  IF you pixel from memory.

@CaKsTeR: Re-create it... Mix it up a little. Change things, For example Take the Tianemmen Square tank picture change it into 4 gangster cars with a woman in front starting a race or something like that.

I didn't notice the rules. I rarely participate in these things anyway.

Apologies all.

Cakster. Follow the rules. Try not too peek. Make it your own, but its (in my eyes) absolutely OK to look if you're stumped.

Honor system >(

I'm having troubles with who will be on each side... Here is what I got. On the "Dominant" side is White, Rich, Handsome, Healthy, Strong, Christian, Men.  And on the "Ressesive" Side I have, Colored, Poor, Ugly, Un-Healthy, Weak, Non-Christian or Women. Now I don't want to be racist or sexiest, and I don't know what to leave or add, and I'm stuck. I know Christians aren't "Dominant" but I put them on there. I also want to make a second pixel with everything on 1 Sign and 2 fountain are 1, no longer separated. CC?

for some reason people are confusing iconic with famous. I believe that if the challenge is on iconic pictures then it should be a picture that stands for something, but it is not a must for it to be famous. Therefore I can basically pixel any picture that symbolizes something (my country's history/culture/important event etc.). Am I correct?

People seemed to have misunderstood what I was asking :P Doesn't matter, I've got my answer.

Also, finished the basic lineart of my entry. I don't know what to add to make it my own, maybe some aliens in the background :P

C+C? Everything on the spacesuit looks too empty.. Maybe I'll go look at some pictures of them.

You should show a camraman with no space suit and the boom comeing out of the top of the picture. You know cuz the moon landing was filmed since the flag is blowing and not down.

Sorry 4squares, that is not pixel art... just auto aa-ed text. Make some evil character or something, mocking or scolding at you. Or, an animation of a virus taking over, then the screen shuts off. Just giving you ideas. If you wanna participate in the challenge, make some art! And try to make your own font =) Trust me, users here at Pixel Joint frown upon default texts.

Skeds, theyre dont have to be a photo, it can be of a famous painting, as long as its someone that most people would recognise in that pose. Putting your own slant on it is good.

Also, what dyu think of my wip? How can I improve?

I've done a lineart for this week's contest.

I hope I'll have time to do the rest before sunday

Reference 1 is  http://www.desireedolron.com/images/Desiree-Dolron-Xteriors/06-Desiree-Dolron-Xteriors-VII.jpg - Xteriors VII by Desiree Dolron (for general idea, the clair-obscure atmosphere, dress and cold tones palette; I just love this dutch photographer... she's very well known in Europe)

Reference 2 is  http://www.abcgallery.com/C/christus/christus5.html - A Young Lady by Petrus Christus (I just love this painting and it's iconic, even if it's less famous than Van Gogh... The model in Desiree's photo is very resemblant with this one...)

Reference 3 is http://www.abcgallery.com/V/vermeer/vermeer12.html - The Music Lesson by Jan Vermeer (for the perspective)

Will that be accepted?

sorry, i probably misunderstood what you were getting at

Posted By: Irozumi Urado
Date Posted: 09 July 2008 at 12:25pm
@skeddles - it can be a painting. (a picture in a larger sense...)

"An icon is a graphic device that represents some object or action, the graphic device being ascribed symbolic meaning(s) beyond the object represented." So iconic is said about an image (or something else) that stands for something in a certain culture. It doesn't mean that it's necessarily known by all. The definition changed when adopted by the press. Icon became the front page image that everyone had in mind when referring to an historic event. That's where the attribute "famous" appeared...
the choice of a reference is pretty blurry,  so you can use your own interpretation :p

My entry is finished, I think. I'd like to know your opinions about it.
It's Che Guevara with a Pokéball (how original).
I'd like to keep it two-colored, unless you guys insist on AA-ing it.
I have my doubts about the shading of the arms, since there practically is no shading. I am not sure if they would be completely white.

please give me your opinion, because I'd really like to have a good entry for once.

To be honest, looks like you just used the reference of the face, and pixeled a near replica of it, and pasted onto a body that doesn't match it what-so ever. It's evident by the detail of the face, but the poor definition of anatomy, especially on the hands and arms: they looked deformed, even if they are supposedly supposed to be in a "pokemon" style...it just doesn't fit here...Also, you're just going to leave it black and white? Kinda' bland if you ask me...
