Just an idea. It's straight forward, but maybe not the most interesting.

Maybe a few dead trees can be mingled into the surrounding trees, and obviously the bridge is a fallen tree.

Graindolim, why not making a snow made of these polygons? That would make it look seared by some sort of metallic rain. The upright-downleft direction looks interesting: together with the colours, it does not look too "onward-and-upwardly": nice effect!

A stump or a log doesn't count as a dead tree does it? does it have to be a standing dead tree?

"this week's challenge is to create an image depicting at least one dead tree."

I think you may do any position or any kind of tree execpt its dead ( a log is just a position of a once living tree )

A wooden stool will do then?
Nice wooden creature (reminds swamp thing)

@Graindolium: i really like the curves in last pic, quite a change from your style.

@tanuki + mrmotarius: i wish i could doodle like you, it looks very promising!

My plan is to make a night time scene with a moon in the background. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

what I have so far:

I didn't realize the size restriction at first, so it started off quite a lot wider

Here's what I had first:

Trying to make it work in a smaller space:

Someone critique me please. OR tell me what to do or where to go from here.

@CPearson: I think it's looking great. The smoke doesn't look like it's coming out of the mouth though. Could be darker in the back of the mouth, and add some AA or dither.

Here's my heavy WIP. Going to a petrified tree leaking lava. Not sure where to go with the BG.

The challenge will end in 2 days and you will have to put lots of effort on that. I cant see the relation to a dead tree, what do you meant with that? is that his tongue? sorry man try doing something else or make it more obvious.

Good Luck

so yeah I may be too late to post but I wanted to finish this for my own goals. Again I am pretty new to pixel art and this my first real scene that I've made so any comments are appreciated.

Made marginal progress, but I'm homing in on the finish line.
Crits or whatever are welcome, I know that the geometry of the top branches isn't completely Euclidean, right now I'm just bluffing the shapes to look good, rather than to solidly adhere to the lighting model. I probably won't fix it before the challenge is over.

CPearson, your tree looks more like it sleeps that is dead.

Dithering this sky is bloody tedious.

>your tree looks more like it sleeps that is dead.

I think it'll be obvious enough that it's actually meant to be dead, considering the name of the challenge.

If you have advice on the distinction between dead and sleeping, I'd like to hear it, however.
