CHALLENGE: Commodore 4

Back by popular demand, another http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_64 - C64 challenge. There's a lot of info here, so make sure you actually look over it.

There's no specific theme this week, instead you must only use 4 colours out of the available 16. Your piece does not have to adhere to any particular C64 restrictions (these are detailed in the links below). However, it must use one of the palettes shown below - either http://www.pepto.de/projects/colorvic/ - Pepto 's palette, or http://www.pixeljoint.com/p/2191.htm - Ptoing 's adjusted version of that palette.

Optional Bonus Challenge: Use correct mcol (multicolour mode) restrictions - this means create the image using double width pixels. See the first link below for more information on different modes.

A bunch of useful links and a Grafx2 script:

  • http://www.studiostyle.sk/dmagic/gallery/gfxmodes.htm - C64 restrictions (including mcol)
    • http://goto.glocalnet.net/richard_fhager/inf_db_testC64.lua - A script for checking C64 restrictions in http://code.google.com/p/grafx2/ - Grafx2 by http://www.pixeljoint.com/p/23821.htm - DawnBringer
  • C64 factoids by Ptoing
  • Some examples of http://c64pixels.com/main.php?g2_view=keyalbum.KeywordAlbum&g2_keyword=X%2F+4-Color - 4 colour C64 pieces http://goto.glocalnet.net/richard_fhager/inf_db_testC64.lua -

Canvas Size - Exactly 320 (width) x 200 (height).
Colours - Exactly 4. Pick 4 colours from one of the 16 colour palettes below. No palette swapping, you either use Pepto's palette or Ptoing's palette.

Pepto:

Ptoing:

Transparency - No.
Animation - Optional.

I'm a little confused, because if one would want to follow the multicolor restricions it would only work at the cost of the challenge rules. I'm referring to the resolution, the link provided demands 160*200,the challenge rules on the other hand demand 320*200.

mcol is wide pixels - this means that each pixel is twice the length of a regular pixel, so 160 x 2 = 320.

I see, now that everything is cleared up it's time to give it a try.

"No palette swapping, you either use Pepto's palette or Ptoing's palette."

Just use one of the palettes.

Personally, I think the most difficult part of this challenge is the huge size. I never worked on anything even half that size.

Ok, so i have to do something 320 x 200 wide WITH mcol? If i want no mcol, can i do it 160 x 200?

I've been having fun with Project One... But I've never made a strictly 4color image with it before.

Here's a result of me doodling in Project One for a few hours (a WIP nearing completion, if you will):

I've made a mini tileset, and added some details and stuff. It was actually pretty much enjoyable :)

I can't stop looking at it.
Which palette did you use?

@Jaker: It would be 160 x 200 in square pixels, but since it's have to be in widepixel it ends up still being 320 x 200.

Good stuff Mrmo :)

Well, Project One uses Pepto's palette as default, so I didn't quite have to worry about that :)
I used the darker green at first, but then changed it to the reddish one for added contrast.
It's currently in this subset:

*edit* I've added more foliage, vines, and a couple of waterfalls. Floating islands don't quite look complete without waterfalls :)

I don't know if I'll go any further with this.
It will be my first challenge entry ever, though :D

*edit#2:

Made some additional changes, I'll submit the piece now :P

that looks very nice already!!! buts its better to not submit that early...
u might get some more ideas during the week...
for example, ...maybe make it somekind of mockup, with sprites, meters etc
id love to see that,
i think it would work really well some platform-adventure-rpg-thingy

VERY WIP. Suggestions?

Here's a wip. I can't decide how I should make the backround. Could have used a fifth color here. I'm going try with different combinations now and see if I get any ideas from that.

I feel like if it's done but I'm always to fast to get it up.

Any suggestions or ideas? Or does it look done?

You could add a sky texture of some kind, if that would not look noisy :)

Quick question. Must the preview follow the rules too?
Like can I make an animated preview with different colors?

errh..

Well, I thought it best not to dwell on it anymore, as it has already taken me quite a bit more time than I initially thought it would :)

I did make a piece with sprites and meters yesterday, though not for the challenge :)

I think I may actually participate. Whipped this up in a couple of hours, so far haven't touched the BG and his legs are irritating me something chronic, just can't work out how to shade them.

Any suggestions?

Please do something about pixels.
now you have pixels doublesized which is not what c64 multicolor pixels are about. you need to have 160x200 and now you have like 160x100
its neither multicolor nor hires in terms of c64 modes.

Posted By: Lóng
Date Posted: 21 October 2010 at 7:46am
Double sized pixels = 2 wide pixels stacked on top of each other and thus this follows the mcol restrictions.

Posted By: SpaceSalmon
Date Posted: 21 October 2010 at 9:41am
There are no such restrictions to this challenge but thanks for your concern.

That's pretty awesome thus far Guest,i lovee the background but something about the top of the guy's hood bothers me.

Posted By: Mrmo Tarius
Date Posted: 22 October 2010 at 2:24am
@Guest666, all the details you've put in there... just amazing O_O

Just checking... Are multiple entries allowed? Seems my Level 4 piece works pretty well in 4 colours :P

Posted By: jeremy
Date Posted: 22 October 2010 at 3:12am
@Mrmo: Multiple entries are always allowed, some guy entered 12 in one week D: Only little issue that may/may not pop up is getting rid of the other one, just for the same reason that the same sprite recoloured wouldn't get in twice (Don't delete yet, not sure)

@ Space Salmon: If you're going to do it in doublepixel, why not just in singlepixel? :p

@Guest: Pretty nice, but either the hood it a bit boofy (totally a word) or the head a bit small.

@Oreo: Needs to be 320 horizontal by 200 vertical, kay?

Question, can we add the border?

Posted By: ultimaodin
Date Posted: 22 October 2010 at 7:43pm

Just started on the BG.

@Leaf- The far arm looks a it bandy. Otherwise I'm really liking how it's coming along

@LB- excellent pixel placement. The only thing I have to complain about is it doesn't feel like a scene as a whole just a collection of bits and pieces at the point in time.

@Clovvach - you can have a border as long as it fits within the 320 x 200 canvas. So, no extra border outside the maximum canvas size.

edit: just something I was working on, don't think I'm actually going to finish it off any time soon =/

@Jeremy @Roller: thank you, i didn't notice the hood was a bit too big

update : everything is less "random" and more colorful.

I still can't decide which one is better

@Guest666: the red-green variant 'pops out' because of greater contrast, I'd vote for it :)

...so, may I submit the 4-color version of the 'Level 4' to the challenge?
To clarify, It was made during the challenge week, it's just that I thought I couldn't submit more than one piece and added 3 more colors at first- turns out it works without them as well :)
