CHALLENGE: Good Bye Old Friend

After 32 years of duty Microsoft is planning to kill off MS Paint with this year's Autumn/Fall Creators Update. I think we can all relate to Paint in a way, whether good or bad.

There is a good chance that your first piece of pixel art was done with the help of MS Paint. For this week's challenge we want you to go back to one of your first pixels and recreate it with all your now acquired knowledge about rendering, colours and AA.

Make sure to put a link to the original artwork in the description.

Canvas Size -  Unrestricted.
Colors - Max. 32.
Transparency - Optional.
Animation - Optional.

CHALLENGE RULES

  • Participants have until this upcoming Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) to submit their entry (strict). Don't forget to check the 'Submit to weekly challenge' checkbox.
  • Only new pixels allowed.
  • Open to all members.
  • Posting WIPs in this thread or in new threads in the WIP section is highly encouraged, but ONLY SUBMIT YOUR FINAL ART.

CHALLENGE JUDGING

  • Every Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) the previous week's entries are judged.
  • Every week a new voting poll will be posted for previous week's entries.
  • Winner announced the following week.

CHALLENGE PRIZES/GOODIES

  • Top three finishers will receive an award displayed in your PJ gallery profile for all to see and envy.
  • Top finisher gets to call the following week's challenge...sweet.
  • 'Participation' ribbons will be given for all who enter.
  • No matter what happens you get challenged :)

CHALLENGE VOTING

Vote now for your favorite pixelart in this week's challenge!

This is what I will recreate. This challenge is forcing me to finally create a base sprite sheet for a size I like working with just for fun.

Perfect timing with this challenge; I was just thinking of remaking some old sprites last week haha.
Remaking this:
(sorry, native size file doesn't exist anymore)
Rough sketch(mostly just pose):

Nevermind changing almost everything XD

Wat do you guys think about the pose? I kinda like it but still feels a bit odd somehow, not sure exactly what I should change...

To above post:
I think the pose is definitely better. More action-orientated.

I think his left leg is in a bit of a weird position/angle though. Loses some of the power in his stance due to the foot pointing inwards.

Thoughts?

Quake, I think you should try to make the pose more dynamic, like in the original. If you want a more powerful look, you can still achieve it without going for such a plain angle and stance.

Quick response!

True. I'll have a go at changing it and making the pose more dynamic. Thanks.

Are you planning on doing anything?

edit:

Think I'll finalise on this pose. Don't want to spend too much time on it.

Nope. My first pixel art is gone, so I can't link to it.

Edit: I think that looks much swooshier, Quake! Consider making the salamander interact with its environment, perhaps? The original looked like it was climbing on some invisible rocks.

It doesn't have to be your first. One of your first is good enough.

Great wips so far!

I don't know how close it is to being first, but I found some stuff from 2005 o_o I guess I'll try to do something with that.

Thoughts on the shading?

Good idea, Eishiya. I'll have a look into doing some rocks. Need to do some fire near the tail as well.

Tail is WIP so it hasn't been shaded yet.

@giaart186: Remake your first (or close to first) pixel art, applying knowledge/skills you've learned since then.

@Quake: It looks very slick and shiny, but there's not a good sense of light source/direction. Maybe block in the fire before you do the shading?

Edit: Tossing my WIP here, done for tonight. I am trying to make this a legit tileset since the original was tile-based, but I want to make it more practical and versatile. The corners are more blocky because of this.

Need to make the flower tiles and the objects tomorrow.

Awesome progress, Eishiya.

Added flame and updated shading. Hopefully better now!

So am I to understand that last weeks challenge has been extended? Or is my computer not displaying correctly?
