@fawful
I'm so glad you kept at this, both great edits, looking a LOT more refined now, the work on the chin and eyes makes a huge difference!

@guest666
I love this character, and your job of him - excellent pixelwork

@IEvangeline
Welcome! Looking good so far, the bands of light on the hair could do with a little more detail/shape to them, blur your eyes looking at some nice manga hairstyles for ideas maybe? Crit is never meant negatively, even if it sometimes sounds that way - we're all just looking to help eachother do the best we can, and as soon as we stop listening to criticism we stop improving, so it's all good really! :)

@Manupix
It's been great so far seeing your workflow, looking good. I agree about the bright clouds, the bottom of your neck looks a little rough compared to the face too I think.

Here's my WIP so far,

I'm afraid it might be too busy and unreadable. Looking at it the dark areas are still a bit too rough too.. A little bit of Andy Warhol inspiration going on here, he was my first thought on seeing the palette for the challenge!

EDIT:
@repstyle
Woah! I love it!

EDIT 2:
I worked on it some more, tidying the shape and dithering a bit more readability into it

Decided to get psychedelic with it, hee hee. Played with the face a bit, not sure if it's much better; I'll continue to mess around with it until the deadline. I used onek's amazing 1px font for the text. Hopefully he'll give me permission to use it before the deadline, if not I'll figure something out.

Anyways. . . more suggestions, please? I'm not sure I have much of a chance since folks have already submitted some really awesome stuff but it's a great challenge.

Update;
current   older oldest
Here is where I'm at now, side by side to see changes. Its looking more human and more like me (was that contradictory? :P) now, I think the dithering has helped with readability, I was relying on the darkest color far too much before. It's amazing what you notice on taking a break and returning to something.

Thanks for the good points people!
Not sure I'll keep that cheek texturing.

Great stuff everyone!
Cilein, lovely concept! Yes a bit noisy and dark. Dithering with this palette is extremely risky!!! I'd recommend limiting it strictly to couples of near colors (dark green and blue for instance), and think light when you do it: some transitions where light is tangent need softness, others need sharpness.
The mouth doesn't need the black outline all around, and the lower lip shadow is missing.

Sorry guys, just explaining banding and warning against jpeg.

Edit: bitten beaten by a beetle! XD

Edit2: oui chef!

I like it how I can understand that sentence just fine without having ever studied French in my whole life. Yay for being a native Portuguese speaker.

I also like how I can understand everything else without taking English classes, but that's thanks to videogames and the internet, and not how similar my first language is to it, so it's pretty unrelated.

@jalonso :
Really, thank you for this explanation with example on my piece as reference.

@Manupix :
Merci pour la traduction c'est carrément plus clair depuis que tu as dit "paquets de segments parallèles accolés, c'est vilain parqu'on perçoit un grand rectangle".
Tu es français ?

So, i'm not enough good to see this kind of mistakes but i'll try to fix all that i see and post it soon.

EDIT :

If i get it :

EDIT 2 :
In fact, "b" and "c" generate perspective so it's getting a RIGHT for me.

... i see banding everywhere now !

Been trying to fix things based on the crit, and tried another few ways of blending the colors/their edges, I'm still undecided which way to go on it, I've definitely needed this practice.

#1  #2 #3 #4

#4 Is the current version, I like this best of these tweaks. I've tried to use the dithering better now to differentiate soft and hard shadows too Manupix, thanks for that advice. And thank you jalonso - adding in some shine and lighter color to the pupil and iris definitely de-flattened the eyes!

@Souly
I love it!! Where did that come out of? (imagination, based on a ref etc?)

@repstyle: without context it's hard to say whether those are banded or not. banding often occurs from bad/non-existent AA. With more obvious colours:

That took longer than expected to make, hopefully you can apply that to your work D:

i see banding everywhere now !

super! :D

@Jeremy : Thank you for more explanation (in french ^^ too)

EDIT : I've done a 7 colors version (probably the final version:

@fawful :
I'm new in pixel art but not at art.
I'm a concept artist, illustrator with some experiences so i think that gives me  facilities to do and enjoy pixel art (my website: . ).

And i'm motivated by the challenge and the current video game industry can need more pixel artist to satisfy the little-screen's audience.

And it's fun to see what we can represent with only fews colors and in a so little size

@all, the forum and this challenge thread is for help and ideally a lesson for all. We like it and encourage it.

@repstyle, there is a lot that could be fixed and could be technically better but take it slow and develop techniques as you work on pieces. Unlike traditional art styles pixelart considering its small art with few colors has a lot of complexity and technicalities.

Nicely put jalonso, it's about the journey not the end with most things - as soon as you stop travelling you stop improving, and the core concepts are often the easiest to forget about yet most important.

repstyle: just submit as usual (Gallery / Submit pixel art) and don't forget to check Submit to weekly challenge at page bottom.
You'll also have to make a preview piece 100x100 px max.

Eh, help!

Okay. . . I've got a last-minute dilemma and I don't know what to do. I've copied the colors exactly from the palette for the challenge, but every time I put my piece through the checker all of the colors fail. They're just a little off and I don't know what the deal is! I've done all I know how to preserve the colors. Does photobucket alter them at all? Or is there a problem with the program(s) I am using, Pixen and/or Paintbrush?

Here's the image:

Whatcha got against onek's font? Ha ha.

If you can swap the colors quickly and easily, I'd be eternally grateful. I know I could do it no problem on a number of programs. (That I don't have.)

Thaaaank you Skamocore.

Perhaps the colour issue has something to do with using a mac, and therefore having a different colour space. I'm not too sure though, colour spaces confuse me.

But, like I said, if the colours are similar enough when you submit it, I'll be able to just change them over the to the right ones.

Maybe that's it. Also it is a gif, not a png. (Maybe that one on the board is a png but I put the gif through the checker just now and it's still bad.) I'll be submitting it shortly. Thanks again.

You've got to wait for it to pass through public queue and be checked for the specifications. Don't worry, if it's good it'll be there before the time's up.

@jalonso
by "be more graphic, dramatic and bold about it" were you referring to how I did the eyes? I've blanked, not sure if I prefer #2 or #4 of mine in terms of style. This has been a great challenging challenge, I've took a lot from it :D

@Photocopier
maybe a simple design of squares and such, you don't want to take from your pic but the blue looks a bit lonely. Patch is definitely better placed now, and the folds in the clothing are great. Kudos too for being able to use the cyan color well!

@fawful
Looking smexcellent. Take the shine on the cheeks (lightest highlight) and shift it up a few pixels perhaps to take the thick bands appearance away. Maybe drop that same color from the adams apple, the lighting to me suggests it wouldn't be as bright and shiny. The shoulder on the bottom left looks a tad sparse, some dithering or detail would de-flatten it. It's a struggle to find things though, this piece has come so far (and all in the right direction) :D

EDIT: eek! The checker link is dead/not loading for me, I wanted to double check my palette's correct..

Is this too much? ;P

Fawful: agree with Cilein. It has improved lots, but it still looks like shading was generally done out of your mind and not out of some ref.

@all: whoever will come out with the right answers about those maddening color change issues is a hero. As far as I know, color spaces change the way colors display, not their actual values unless you convert an image from one space into another. If some software does that without warning its author must be tarred and feathered. Similarly the png display issue supposedly is, ah, a display issue. Grrrr.

eye edit:

@Manu, just use cyan on the right side of face and see if it works. Lightsource at ear level and strong.

Sweet moses I'll get right on that!

Edit; sorted now (I'm pretty certain). I used photoshop to make this piece, I wonder where the color information got lost.. too many re-saves of new versions? On the plus side it's more colorful now that the palettes straight.

I see what you mean by your edit, I worked the brighter eyes in without changing direction/mood I wanted, here's the final now;

link

Edit: the boards ahead of my time, and it hasn't been approved yet don't forget about me! :)

Thanks a lot jal, that was decisive! I didn't put the source as low as you suggested, because the whole piece and refs are lit from top right, and I can't change all that now.
I don't think I'm going with the reptile version either, it would take a whole more lot of work on those scales.

Cilein: you must have auto-aa enabled on at least one tool: brush, eraser, bucket, or a selection tool. Check jal's post up there.

This video by Alex Pardee pretty much sums up my creative process.
