MisBug: change!
Anatomy is wrong (arm, shoulders, neck); light could be more interesting with a strong backlit / silhouette effect.
Nice composition and atmosphere.

Could really use advice on anatomy, virtually no experience there.
The hand pose is supposed to be commanding, and I was rather shooting for Saruman's hand while using his Palantir in the Fellowship of the Ring.

I think the white makes it quite difficult to see the detail on the rest of the scene. Maybe use the blue?

Done with the samurai on the left (even hidden parts), moving on to the hand...

Thanks for the tip.  I assume you're talking about the white background, which I like for some reason.  I'm trying to make the details pop a bit more without changing the white.

I do like your design, but the finger in front of the face of the samurai seems a bit weird.  My eye just goes to that section.  Great use of the palette though.

I'd been making changes to the hand and fingers shape, but I'm still not satisfied with it. I'm saving it for last so I can have best idea of how to do it. Also, I'm really intimidated by shading something that large with at most 5 colors.
I must say, that neon green really ticks me off... I don't think I'll use it for anything other than the background and eye-whites.

Going to see what I can throw together with the background...

Thanks for your suggestion; I was planning to change the arm somehow because it was too long and it was going to make the left hand look weird... by the way I can't understand what do you mean by wrong anatomy on the neck...

Anyway: what do you think about this edit?

His neck seems a bit long, and doesn't transition too well into the head.
Also, I think you should use the darker colors to anti-alias your black, or whatever color that is. Especially at the root of the left arm, and the pants.

MisBug: I'm not too sure about what exactly is wrong, I suck at anatomy, but I see it's wrong. Probably what ambient says, also maybe the shoulder is too low?
The arm is not better; mostly I can't see whether it is stretched or at an angle, nor where is the elbow. There certainly is a question of light there: I don't think the biceps could be lit from the right side like this; on the contrary, if the elbow points towards us (most probable) then the upper arm should be mostly in shadow.
The rest of the body looks good. I think. ;)

I find that dithering usually works poorly in high contrast pallets, especially on smooth things like clothing. I suggest a series of curved, shrinking lines. Looking great!

I'm trying to hide the fact that I'm on a limited pallet, but I feel it sticks out like a sore thumb on the hand.

Edit: Sorry for the image blackouts on my post, they were hosted on my site and it got wiped. Restored now.

Before you go any further, keep in mind that the canvas is exactly 120 x 120.

Does it have to be the old kind of style, can it be anime or cartoony?

Hi
I'm new here.  I haven't done much pixel art lately, but I saw your wall of fame and I want to be on it. So, I thought I'de just enter the ronin contest.  Here's my wip.  It's just the outline.  I looked through some of the comments you guys make and I like 'em.  Especially the ones that point out every error.  I know what I have so far isn't much, but  I'de appreciate any comments.
thanx.
