Aussie duo's pixel art Simpsons tribute to become the show's next opening

Over 2 million views later...

The Simpsons family have been sharing our lounge rooms for 26 years.

For some, hearing the television show's opening theme song may trigger memories of races between siblings to nab the lounge for its former 6pm Channel Ten time slot.

Clearly we were all attempting to create a nightly re-enactment of the familiar introduction scene of the Simpson family racing for their American style 'couch'.

Melbourne-based room-mates Ivan Dixon and Paul Robertson took this reenactment idea one step further, by recreating the entire introduction in pixel art.

Pixel art is a form of digital art, where images are edited to replicate the old school graphics style of computer and console games.

The Simpsons' new pixilated style was paired with an arcade-like remake of Danny Elfman's theme song by visual artist Jeremy Dower.

The retro style video was uploaded to YouTube and in under two days, the video had received over one million views.

Twelve hours after the video was uploaded Ivan received an email from the show's creators, asking him to call them straight away.

"The email went to my spam folder, so I actually thought it was a hoax, " said Ivan.

After calling the number Ivan found out the creators actually wanted to use their video to open the next episode of The Simpsons this Sunday at 8pm in America.

For Ivan and Paul, it really feels like a dream come true.

"We secretly hoped they would pick it up, but it all came so fast."

The video has now surpassed two million views and can only be expected to climb more after its premiere.

Named 'SIMPSONS PIXELS', the video follows the original introduction faithfully, incorporating Homer at the nuclear power plant, Bart's comic chalkboard writing and Marge at the Kwik-E-Mart, though most scenes receive new additions, including Lisa playing her saxophone to a class occupied by Game Boys.

The end of the video involves a time warp, where die-hard fans can pick up on various iconic moments through out the show's history.

There is also plenty of gaming references, sticking to pixel art's origins in gaming culture.

This is the first project between the creative pair, although Ivan says they like to scheme about future ideas in the studio space they share in Melbourne with other creatives.

For Ivan, pixel art is a learnt skill, but for Paul it is his speciality.

Paul has has worked on graphics for numerous games and did animation for episodes of the successful Disney show Gravity Falls.

One of Ivan's favourite past design projects was when he and colleague Greg Sharp co-directed three of musician Gotye's music videos.

Greg and Ivan work together under the name Rubberhouse, which is their primary animation studio.

Other clients the studio has worked with include Vice, Warner Brothers and Cartoon Network.

Of course you've been damn succesful with this project so far, but how about quadrupling the exposure by uploading some of the sprites to PJ?

Thanks for the feature!
Jalonso, they have our names in the end credits and even included a photo of us. We were happy to change the opening credits to bring it in line with the rest of the show.

Saw it on the TV World Premiere as if I had not already seen it a dozen times.

I totally understand editing the ending credits to add Matt Groening but was very disappointed that Paul and Ivan were not credited

Great news for some Melbourne locals. Ivan has an account here on pixeljoint, but I forget his username. :)

The Simpsons guys would be fools not to pick this up. This'll be a nice primetime spotlight to showcase the pixel medium.

Here's a tumblr with some of the backgrounds and animations isolated from the video, in case anyone wanted to take a look.
